Summary

The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz。 Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life。

When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art。

It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades。

A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized。

Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit。 In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past。 His own family。

For even the City of Light casts long shadows。 And in that darkness devils hide。

NOTE: I listened to the audiobook version。I love Louise Penny's books, but I must confess that the last few have been weaker than her earlier works。 I was worried that, barring a change, this series would either draw to a close or decline in quality as it was written into the ground。Fortunately, this book was the change we needed。 Unlike most of the series, Three Pines barely features in this book, as the main events take place with the Gamaches in Paris。 Although I expected to miss the town's p NOTE: I listened to the audiobook version。I love Louise Penny's books, but I must confess that the last few have been weaker than her earlier works。 I was worried that, barring a change, this series would either draw to a close or decline in quality as it was written into the ground。Fortunately, this book was the change we needed。 Unlike most of the series, Three Pines barely features in this book, as the main events take place with the Gamaches in Paris。 Although I expected to miss the town's presence, Penny makes up for it with one of the best mystery plots in the whole series。 I suspect that the author needed a creative break from the ensemble cast, which will let her return to them refreshed and ready to write。The only sour note (and this may be a personal issue) was with some of the names of new characters。 It may be down to the fact that I don't know French, but a lot of the character names sounded very similar to me, which caused quite a bit of confusion。 I'm inclined to attribute this issue to the narrator, but it could just be me。 。。。more

There's not much that I can say that - given the number of reviews that exist - will be original。 But, I want to note that Penny has a tremendous ability to keep the story moving at fast pace, building up the tension, and then adding a wee joke that makes me laugh out loud (literally)。 The citation of that well-known pugilist, Mike Tyson, was the leading example of this in the book。 Unlike most of the Gamache series, this does not take place in Three Pines but does incorporate the entire family There's not much that I can say that - given the number of reviews that exist - will be original。 But, I want to note that Penny has a tremendous ability to keep the story moving at fast pace, building up the tension, and then adding a wee joke that makes me laugh out loud (literally)。 The citation of that well-known pugilist, Mike Tyson, was the leading example of this in the book。 Unlike most of the Gamache series, this does not take place in Three Pines but does incorporate the entire family much more than normally。 There is the usual emphasis on the assistance of friends, which at times seems a little unlikely (just how many highly-placed people do the family know?), but what the heck。The action is a lot more Ludlum-esque than normal, suitable for a Bond villain more than a simple murder in a small village。 In fact, I found the stakes to be rather unrealistically high in this book, but again, what the heck。 We read these books for the interaction of the characters, the charm of the language, and the unrolling of the plot。 If we want something more plausible, we should read our daily news reports of global pandemic, murder hornets, fires, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes, and other quotidian concerns。 。。。more

I haven't read any of Louise Penny's other books。 So, not sure if its because I jumped into a series or its just the writing style。 I had the hardest time keeping track of the characters。 She jumped from character to character and I couldn't keep up who was currently narrating the story。 And, in the end, I just didn't think it came together all that well。 I haven't read any of Louise Penny's other books。 So, not sure if its because I jumped into a series or its just the writing style。 I had the hardest time keeping track of the characters。 She jumped from character to character and I couldn't keep up who was currently narrating the story。 And, in the end, I just didn't think it came together all that well。 。。。more

4。5 stars because the plot seemed a little far fetched。 So far I still love every book Louise Penny writes!

Good book in the Penny series。 This one has a family plot made more interesting because its sitting is Paris。 Quite a drama with lots of sidetracks, especially that silly bit about cologne…

I heard about the author, Louise Penny, on the Sunday Morning television show。 She is a Canadian author and sounded interesting so I read one of her books。 She writes great mysteries。 Loved this one too。 Inspector Gamache gets tangled up in murder and attempted murder in France this time instead of Canada。 His children have moved to France and on a visit the man who raised him is the victim of a hit-and-run that eventually involves the whole family。 Kept me guessing until the very last。

Another brilliant offering from Louise Penny featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache。 Armand and his wife Reine-Marie are staying in their Paris apartment, visiting their son Daniel and his family, and of course their daughter Annie and her husband Jean-Guy who have also recently re-located to France。 With Annie's second baby due at any time, it should be an idyllic holiday for the whole family。 However the happiness is cut short when Armand's godfather, the elderly billionaire businessman Step Another brilliant offering from Louise Penny featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache。 Armand and his wife Reine-Marie are staying in their Paris apartment, visiting their son Daniel and his family, and of course their daughter Annie and her husband Jean-Guy who have also recently re-located to France。 With Annie's second baby due at any time, it should be an idyllic holiday for the whole family。 However the happiness is cut short when Armand's godfather, the elderly billionaire businessman Stephen Horowitz is gravely injured in a hit and run。 What follows reveals a web of corrupt business dealings and threats to the whole Gamache family。 A fascinating read, all the better for the wonderful descriptions of the beautiful city of Paris。 。。。more

Really liked the drama between son Daniel, and Armand。 Daniel had misunderstood a conversation between his parents, and it left a 25 year scar。 One of my sons had a misunderstanding (get this), through a another misunderstanding of neighbors discussing how my wife and I decided to put our old beagle Creek, to sleep (after much suffering as an old dog)。 Having read Carol Dweck's book Mindset, I was aware of scars that can happen to a nine year old, and yet still have an effect 30 years later。 Thi Really liked the drama between son Daniel, and Armand。 Daniel had misunderstood a conversation between his parents, and it left a 25 year scar。 One of my sons had a misunderstanding (get this), through a another misunderstanding of neighbors discussing how my wife and I decided to put our old beagle Creek, to sleep (after much suffering as an old dog)。 Having read Carol Dweck's book Mindset, I was aware of scars that can happen to a nine year old, and yet still have an effect 30 years later。 This showed me some real thoughtfulness, and life-experience on the part of L。 Penny。 It made quite a first impression on me as a reader。 I'm going to pick up Still Life and indulge Louise Penny again。 Books like this often have weak character development; not this one。 I was seeing and enjoying these characters visually。 I cared for them all。 And of course, Armand, is one of those ethical exemplars that only true readers understand。 Right and Wrong comes from books。 。。。more

Probably the best one of al the books in the chief Inspector Armand Gamache series and I’m wondering if that is because it takes place somewhere outside of Three Pines lol

Louise Penny's usual m。o。: someone who appears to be on the wrong side and "Gotcha" they are undercover working with Gamache all along。 One of the subplots had a real shift that I think wasn't handled very well。 It will appear in future books, so let's see how it is she does with it。 Louise Penny's usual m。o。: someone who appears to be on the wrong side and "Gotcha" they are undercover working with Gamache all along。 One of the subplots had a real shift that I think wasn't handled very well。 It will appear in future books, so let's see how it is she does with it。 。。。more

not sure of when i read this but OH MY GOD。 even though i read this a while ago i just felt like i needed to write a review about it。 louise penny is just amazing。 she is able to build such a detailed world in her books and connect everything so seamlessly。 this book was definitely one of my favorites in this series。 it was so well paced and i was left stunned at the end。 READ THIS WHOLE SERIES IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!!!!

I liked this book and the change of setting (even though I missed the villagers)。 I also liked learning more about Armand’s relationships with his family。 I’m looking forward to the next one!

I enjoyed The Devils Are All Here - my favorite parts were the librarians untangling the mystery, the baby having Down syndrome, the occasional funny lines, and the tension between father and son。 What I couldn’t understand - maybe I missed something since I was listening to the audio book while driving - is the role of rare earth minerals。 Rare earth minerals are rare so it seemed wasteful of GHS to use them in so many projects, instead of selling them for a specific use。 The author did an exce I enjoyed The Devils Are All Here - my favorite parts were the librarians untangling the mystery, the baby having Down syndrome, the occasional funny lines, and the tension between father and son。 What I couldn’t understand - maybe I missed something since I was listening to the audio book while driving - is the role of rare earth minerals。 Rare earth minerals are rare so it seemed wasteful of GHS to use them in so many projects, instead of selling them for a specific use。 The author did an excellent job using many POVs without losing the reader。 。。。more

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec hopes to enjoy his first evening in Paris with his family。 Those hopes are crashed when his beloved godfather is a victim of a hit and run。 Penny does a great job of describing the beautiful city of Paris。 The story is full of unexpected twists and turns。 A good read that will have you keeping the pages turning。

I'd give this book more stars if I could。 "All the Devils are Here" is one of Louise Penny's best。 I had to force myself to put it down。 As with all her books, somethings are resolved and new questions arise。 A book well worth reading。 I'd give this book more stars if I could。 "All the Devils are Here" is one of Louise Penny's best。 I had to force myself to put it down。 As with all her books, somethings are resolved and new questions arise。 A book well worth reading。 。。。more
